Amid the Dhurandhar: The Revenge success, Ranveer Singh faces the Kantara controversy. The actor is set to issue an unconditional apology in court over his IFFI mimicry row.

Ranveer Singh has once again made headlines in relation to the Kantara controversy amid the enormous success of Dhurandhar: The Revenge. The issue over mimicry in Kantara and the ensuing formal complaint against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh was heard by the Karnataka High Court.

Kantara row: Ranveer Singh files unconditional apology

According to reports, Ranveer Singh will tender an unconditional apology in court on April 10th. During the High Court hearing, his lawyer proposed that the actor was even willing to visit the Chamundi Temple in Mysore to personally apologise.

This came after the complainant’s lawyer, Prashant Methal, questioned the apology, calling it insensitive and a mere formality. The complainant argued that Ranveer Singh had only posted an apology on the social media platform Instagram, not a verbal apology. This suggested the move was more of a formality than a genuine repentance.

What is Kantara controversy?

In 2025, a video of Ranveer Singh surfaced on social media. During the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India 2025 in Goa, Ranveer imitated a key scene from the Rishabh Shetty-starrer Kantara: Chapter 1 while praising the film, which earned him widespread criticism. He praised the scene in Kantara: Chapter 1, where Chamundi Daiva enters his body. While mimicking the actor, he referred to Chamundi Daiva as a female ghost, sparking controversy that prompted Ranveer to apologise. He shared a lengthy post on social media, explaining that he intended to highlight Rishabh Shetty’s performance, not to hurt anyone’s sentiments or insult the Daiva.

Dhurandhar 2 star Ranveer Singh issued an apology on Instagram

The actor, who reprised his role of Indian spy Hamza Ali Mazari/Jaskirat Singh Rangi in ‘Dhurandhar 2’, had already apologised for imitating the ‘Daiva’ scene from ‘Kantara’ through an Instagram post. Ranveer Singh had imitated the ‘Daiva’ scene from ‘Kantara’ on stage at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 30, where the film’s director and lead star Rishab Shetty was seen.

Opposition from the Kannada community

The actor faced significant backlash from the Kannada community when a video of him imitating a famous scene from a period drama went viral on social media. Eventually, Ranveer Singh addressed the trolling in an Instagram post and apologised for his mistake. He wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s powerful performance in the film. As an actor, I know the hard work it takes to perform that particular scene exactly the way he did, and I have immense respect for him for that.”
