Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley experienced a dramatic weather shift today as heavy rains pounded the plains and fresh snowfall blanketed the upper reaches, following a recent spike in temperatures and a significant rainfall deficit.
Temperatures across the region plummeted several degrees, providing much-needed relief from the unseasonal warmth.
The sudden precipitation came after days of clear skies and rising mercury, with Srinagar recording highs near 25°C earlier in the week, well above seasonal norms for early March. Upper areas like Sonamarg, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam saw moderate to heavy snowfall, accumulating up to 3-4 inches in higher altitudes, while plains including Srinagar, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Anantnag were lashed by intermittent showers totaling 20-30 mm.
This welcome change addresses the ongoing dry spell, which had left the valley with a 60-75% rainfall deficit this season.
The weather swing disrupted travel on the Gurez-Bandipora road, prompting authorities to issue advisories for tourists and locals.
The Meteorological Department has predicted improvement over the next three days, with partly cloudy skies and light showers possible in isolated plains until March 12. Temperatures are expected to stabilize: Srinagar lows around 2-4°C and highs of 10-13°C; upper reaches may see intermittent snow flurries but no heavy accumulation. Dry weather is likely from March 13, with winds at 15-25 kmph and no major alerts issued.
