Iran-Israel war: How Iran’s Dimona strike challenges Israel’s ‘nuclear ambiguity’? Tehran chose to target Israeli nuclear hub due to…

The Dimona strike was a message from Iran that it has the capability to target locations Israel considers vital to its very existence.

Dimona strike: While it is widely accepted that Israel is a nuclear power, the Jewish state follows what is known in diplomatic vocabulary as “nuclear ambiguity”, as it has never officially confirmed to be in possession of nuclear weapons.

How Iran’s Dimona strike challenges Israel’s ‘nuclear ambiguity’?

However, Iran’s recent strike on Dimona poses a major challenge to Israel’s “nuclear ambiguity” as the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Centre, which was targeted in the missile strike, is widely considered the heart of Israel’s nuclear programme.

Its believed that Israel built its nuclear programme at this facility located on the outskirts of Dimona, and over the years, multiple evidences have emerged to suggest that the is used for producing plutonium, the fissile material used in nuclear weapons.

One such damning evidence is the 1986 testimony of Mordechai Vanunu, an Israeli technician who smuggle photos of the Dimona site to a British newspaper. Israel has never confirmed or denied the photographs of the facility taken by Vanunu.

Notably, Israel is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which means the IAEA, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, cannot carry out inspections at the Dimona facility, so its statement about no damage at the site due to the Iranian missile strike was based more on Israel’s own reports, rather than on-site inspection.

Why Iran chose to strike Dimona nuclear facility?

Iran said it struck the Dimona site in retaliation to an US-Israeli strike on Tehran’s Natanz nuclear facility, though both the United States and the Israel Defence Force (IDF) have denied responsibility for the strike on Iran’s main uranium enrichment facility.

However, experts say that the Dimona strike was a message from Iran that it has the capability to target locations Israel considers vital to its very existence as the Iranian missile completely evaded Israel’s famed multi-layered air defense network, with the IDF acknowledging their interceptors failed.

According to military analysts, while Israel had assumed that its nuclear facilities are unreachable, and protected by its robust air defences and geography, the Iranian strike has shattered these assumptions, and though the strike was never meant to obliterate the facility, it serves to subject the site to a stress-test in public view, which will be studied intricately in Tehran and Washington.

Dimona strike: IDF accuses Iran of targeting civilians

On Saturday, an Iranian ballistic missile struck Dimona, home to the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Centre– Israel’s primary nuclear facility– though its unclear whether the installation was directly hit.

In a post on IDF spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshan accused Iran of targeting civilians, stating that 70 people have been injured in two different civilian neighbourhoods in Israel.

Within just a few hours, over 70 people have been injured in two different civilian neighborhoods in Israel. These attacks highlight the nature of the Iranian terror targeting civilian communities. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Iranian regime is resorting to reckless attacks that only further expose its instability and disregard for human life while strategically targeting civilians,” he said.

IAEA says no indication of damage to nuclear site

Following the Dimona strike, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Sunday it did not receive any indication of damage to the nuclear research centre in southern Israeli town, and was monitoring the situation.

“The IAEA is aware of reports of an incident in the city of Dimona, Israel, involving a missile impact and has not received any indication of damage to the nuclear research centre Negev. Information from regional States indicates that no abnormal radiation levels have been detected,” the agency said in a post on X.
