Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has advised the players from Pakistan’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad to challenge the Pakistan Cricket Board if the reports of fines getting imposed on them is true. Recently, there were multiple reports which claimed that the board has penalised the whole team after their poor performance in the tournament.
According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, each member of the squad was allegedly fined PKR 5 million which is around $18,000. The decision was taken after Pakistan got crushed by India in group stage match. The Men in Green lost by 61 runs and the board had already indicated that a penalty will be withdrawn if the team managed to reach the semi-finals.
But Pakistan failed to qualify under the captaincy of Salman Ali Agha. In the Super 8, their first match was washed out against New Zealand, then they faced defeat against England and even though the team won its last match against Sri Lanka but that wasn’t enough as they did not have a better net run rate to qualify for the semis.
Younis has highlighted that such kind of a similar situation also occurred in the past and he recalled the incident during 2003 when the board tried to fine the players but the team came together and opposed the decision.
“Is it confirmed? If it’s confirmed, then it’s not right. Earlier, an instance like that happened. In 2003, when we returned after the World Cup, Rashid Latif was made the captain, he received a message from the PCB that the match fees will be reduced to half and same will be done with allowance. 1-2 players had taken a stand against this,” Younis told reporters in Pakistan on Tuesday.
“The players now have to take a stand. If the players take a stand, then they wouldn’t be fined,” he added.
