Budget 2026: Did FM Nirmala Sitharaman announce any tax relief for middle class, salaried taxpayers? Know here

Union Budget 2026 keeps income tax slabs unchanged, offering no direct relief to salaried taxpayers while focusing on compliance ease and simpler tax administration.

As expectations ran high ahead of Union Budget 2026, millions of salaried and middle-class taxpayers were hoping for some relief from rising household costs. From inflation to EMIs, many believed the government might tweak income tax slabs or announce fresh cuts to boost disposable income. However, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chose continuity over surprise, keeping income tax rates unchanged.

While presenting her ninth consecutive Union Budget in Parliament, Sitharaman made it clear that the government’s priority this year was not tax rate revisions, but simplifying how taxpayers interact with the income tax system.

Did FM Nirmala Sitharaman Announce Any Tax Relief for Middle Class, Salaried Taxpayers?

The short answer is no. Despite widespread speculation, the Finance Minister did not announce any direct income tax relief for middle-class or salaried taxpayers. There were no changes in tax slabs, exemptions, or rates under either the old or the new tax regime.

The government believes that stability in tax rates, combined with easier compliance and fewer disputes, will benefit taxpayers more in the long run than frequent slab revisions.

No Change in Income Tax Slabs

One of the biggest takeaways from Budget 2026 is that income tax slabs remain exactly the same. This applies to salaried individuals as well as other categories of taxpayers.

The Finance Minister confirmed that the new Income Tax Act will come into force from April 1, 2026, but it does not introduce any slab changes. Expectations of immediate tax cuts were set aside in favour of long-term reforms.

New Tax Regime Remains the Government’s Focus

Budget 2026 once again reinforced the government’s push towards the new tax regime, which continues to remain the default option. While the old regime is still available, the emphasis is on gradually shifting taxpayers to the simpler structure.

Tax experts note that the new regime currently exempts income up to Rs 4 lakh, with gradual slab rates thereafter and a 30% tax rate for income above Rs 24 lakh. Instead of cutting rates, the government is focusing on smoother administration.

Compliance Relief Over Tax Cuts

Although there was disappointment over the lack of tax relief, the Budget introduced several compliance-friendly measures. These include staggered timelines for filing returns and an extension of the revised return deadline till March 31, instead of December 31, by paying a small fee.

These steps are expected to reduce stress and give taxpayers more time to correct errors.

Easier Appeals and Reduced Litigation

The government has lowered the pre-deposit requirement for filing tax appeals from 20% to 10% of the core tax demand, excluding interest and penalties. Experts say this will significantly reduce the financial burden on taxpayers seeking justice.

Updated Returns and Fewer Criminal Cases

Taxpayers will now be allowed to file updated returns even after reassessment proceedings begin, by paying an additional 10% tax. The Budget also proposes decriminalising minor procedural offences, replacing prosecution with monetary penalties.

Stability Over Surprises

Overall, Union Budget 2026 does not deliver direct tax relief, but it signals stability. The government’s strategy is clear fewer disputes, easier compliance, and a gradual shift towards a simpler tax system.

For the middle class, tax rates remain unchanged, but dealing with the tax system is expected to become less complicated and less stressful going forward.
