Mumbai BMC election 2026 dates: The Maharashtra State Election Commission on Monday announced the date for Mumbai civic body polls. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election will be held in a single phase on January 15, 2026 and the results will be declared on January 16. The polling will be held for 29 municipal corporations, 32 district councils, and 336 panchayat samitis. The polling would be conducted on 227 wards in the Greater Mumbai region. The dates were announced in a press conference held by State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare and Secretary Suresh Kakani at Sahyadari Guest House, Malabar Hill.
Mumbai BMC election: Important Dates
Candidates can file their nominations between December 23-December 30. The scrutiny of nominations is set for December 31, 2025, while the last date to withdraw the candidature is January 2, 2026. The allotment of election symbols and final candidate list will be published on January 3, 2026. As per the SEC’s latest instructions, the nomination forms will be submitted offline. Notably, the Supreme Court of India had directed the SEC to complete all local body elections by January 31, 2026, as the elections have been due since 2022.

The BMC polls is set to witness a direct contest between two major alliances in the state, the ruling Mahayuti and the Opposition’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Mahayuti, which governs the state, comprises BJP, Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). While the opposition alliance includes Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and Shard Pawar-led faction of NCP-SP.
The State Election Commission will be using the voter list as of the notified date of July 1, 2025, for this municipal election. The estimated budget of the BMC for the year 2025-26 is Rs 74,427 crore, and the expenditure stands at Rs 43,162 crore, representing 58 per cent of the total budget allocated to development projects.
